Some Americans were infected with COVID in December 2019 – Axios

The National Institutes of Health said Tuesday early morning that testing of samples from a continuous study of Americans reveal a very restricted number of cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection in five U.S. states as early as Jan. 7, 2020. They discovered antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 in 9 samples, verified by means of two separate platforms to reduce incorrect positives, per the research study published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases. They were not discovered in the primary hubs of later hotspot activity, in New York and Seattle, but rather the 9 samples were found in Illinois, Mississippi, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. What theyre saying: “Our study does not speak to the total origin of the virus,” says Sheri Schully, a co-author of the paper and acting chief medical and scientific officer of All of United States. “We havent followed up with these individuals to know if they had traveled outside the U.S., or had contact with folks who took a trip outside the U.S. But, it is crucial, for future pandemic planning, to understand whats occurring during durations of low occurrence in epidemics, such as this,” Schully informs Axios. She states they did not analyze samples prior to Jan. 2, 2020.
