HONG KONG– Hong Kongs granting of a quarantine exemption to Hollywood star Nicole Kidman is drawing criticism from lawmakers as the city tightens up entry limitations for international tourists to manage the coronavirus. Kidman, who supposedly flew to Hong Kong recently from coronavirus-hit Sydney, was excused from a weeklong quarantine and was found in the city today recording a brand-new Amazon Prime Video series titled “Expats,” according to local media reports. The federal government said in a declaration Thursday that it had actually approved the exemption “for the function of carrying out designated expert work.” It stated the work was “conducive to maintaining the necessary operation and advancement of Hong Kongs economy.”

He stated recording the series in Hong Kong would also bring tasks to the city.

“I believe the quarantine period can not be shortened, since we all know that you can still evaluate positive even after 14 days of quarantine, and even if you are immunized,” said Sum Yip, a nursing trainee.

Previously, those taking a trip from medium-risk countries might quarantine for simply seven days in a designated hotel if they had a legitimate vaccination record and a favorable COVID-19 antibodies test. “I think the quarantine duration can not be shortened, due to the fact that we all understand that you can still check positive even after 14 days of quarantine, and even if you are vaccinated,” stated Sum Yip, a nursing trainee. David Peatfield, an instructor from the U.K., stated he did not mind the exemption for Kidman due to the fact that she was vaccinated and her series would bring “excellent promotion” to Hong Kong.

Hong Kong has tightened entry requirements for travelers Kidmans exemption comes as the Hong Kong federal government has tightened up entry requirements for tourists, adding 15 countries including the U.S. to the high-risk category and requiring immunized tourists from medium-risk countries to spend 14 days in quarantine effective Friday.

Some Hong Kong legislators criticized the decision. “Nicole Kidmans exemption case is not almost politics, it involves the health security problem and is a matter of unfairness,” said lawmaker Priscilla Leung. When a family member was contaminated with the coronavirus, Leung stated she herself was not excused from quarantine. Kidmans exemption sets a precedent for other celebs in the future, stated legislator Michael Tien. “(Even) our athletes who came back from the Tokyo Olympics were needed to have seven days of quarantine,” he said.
