Illinois officials are prompting residents to examine themselves and their children thoroughly for ticks after hanging around in woody locations this spring.
Tick populations in your location can be monitored on the IDPH Tick Surveillance Mapping App.
Removing ticks with 24 hours minimizes the risk of illness. Guidelines for tick removal and awareness of symptoms are offered on the IDPH site.
The Illinois Department of Public Health announced that May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month. Ticks carry Lyme and other debilitating and in some cases fatal health problems such as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Tularemia, Ehrlichiosis, and Babesiosis.
