CDC report: 68% of people who exercised indoors at one gym contracted COVID-19 – WJW FOX 8 News Cleveland

( NEXSTAR)– A brand-new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that some indoor exercise centers might have difficulty preventing the spread of COVID-19 among exercisers.

The report studied a single Chicago fitness center in August 2020 and discovered that out of 81 participants of indoor high-intensity classes, 55 people fell sick with COVID-19– or 68 percent.

The CDC said it associates the break out to “the high proportion of guests with COVID-19 who took part in class while symptomatic, or asymptomatic and contagious.”

Twenty-two of those contaminated participated in classes on or after the day signs began, and a lot of attendees (76 percent) wore masks infrequently, including individuals with (84 percent) and without COVID-19 (60 percent).

The fitness center seemed following most public health procedures. All classes were held at 25 percent capacity or less, and mask usage, temperature checks and sign screenings were required on entry. Exercisers were stationed 6 feet apart and brought their own equipment.

Heres the catch: Patrons were enabled to remove masks during exercise, which is not unusual practice at health clubs.

” After getting alert of a COVID-19 case in among its customers, the workout facility closed and notified all attendees of possible COVID-19 exposure,” the CDC said.

While data on transmission of COVID-19 in workout centers is restricted, past break out reports show that increased breathing effort may assist in transmission.

The report highlights the requirement for “combined COVID-19 avoidance strategies,” consisting of mask use in public settings, screening of symptomatic persons, self-isolation after symptom beginning or a favorable test result, and quarantining of individuals who have been exposed to COVID-19.
